David Cook wins 'American Idol'




David Cook is the new "American Idol." The Missouri native took home the title last night after receiving 12 million more votes than his competitor, David Archuleta. That's according to the AP. Cook thanked his fans and said he was speechless. Several contestants from the season returned to give performances. Bryan Adams, Donna Summer and the Jonas Brothers also sang on the show's finale.

Britney Spears is back in the recording studio. People magazine reports the singer is working on a new album, which will follow the "Blackout" album she released last fall. Reps for the pop stars' record label haven't commented. Spears recently returned from Costa Rica where she was vacationing with Mel Gibson and a few of his family members.

Authorities are ordering Wesley Snipes to start serving his prison sentence by June 3. The actor was convicted of tax fraud earlier this year. Snipes' lawyer is hoping to appeal the sentence. He claims the judge left the jury with unclear directions and an insufficient pretrial hearing. If the appeal is granted, Snipes prison deadline won't hold, but prosecutors worry he'll flee if he isn't forced behind bars. That's all according to the AP.

Madonna is promoting her new documentary called "I Am Because We Are." The singer and her husband, Guy Ritchie, were at the Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday for the film's premiere. The movie tells the stories of orphaned children in Malawi, Africa who have lost their parents to AIDS. Madonna was reportedly emotional as she introduced the film to the audience in Cannes. The singer is in the process of adopting a boy from Malawi.

Death Cab for Cutie band members are celebrating their recent chart-topping work. The group's new album, "Narrow Stairs," was number one on the Billboard 200 for the first time since the band came together in the late 1990s. That's according to E! News. Rounding out the top spots are a Frank Sinatra retrospective album called "Nothing But the Best" at No. 2 and "We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things" by Jason Mraz at No. 3.
